About Talents

Talents Fine Arts has been established for over twenty years and since July 2008 has been owned by Frances and Robert Brock, Stephen Douglas and John Gill. The Gallery is well situated in the heart of Malton which not only has a weekly market, but also still hosts cattle and sheep markets; there is also a monthly Farmers' Market and Auction. Its location in North Yorkshire's charming Ryedale makes it a magnet for tourists. Within easy reach is some of England's most dramatic and beautiful scenery, including the historic city of York, William the Conqueror's magnificent Abbey at Selby, Castle Howard of 'Brideshead' fame, the North Yorkshire Moors, the Dales, the Wolds and picturesque coastal fishing villages and resorts like Scarborough, Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby. A wealth of market towns and pretty villages with delightful inns await visitors as they discover ancient abbeys and castles, stately homes, atmospheric museums and relaxing walks.

Malton was inhabited before 8000 B.C. People of the New Stone Age, the Bronze Age and the early Iron Age formed the district and there are many Roman sites. One overlooks the River Derwent at Orchard Field. As Derventio, the town was an important Roman military centre. This established a road network upon which today's access to Malton is based. The Angles built their Malton on higher ground and the Normans built a castle near the Orchard Field settlement. During the Middle Ages, Malton was a walled town with four gates. From medieval times until 1885, Malton was a Borough with two Members of Parliament, one of whom was Edmund Burke (1729-97), the noted statesman and writer. Charles Dickens also visited the town and found inspiration for his novels.

Apart from the fine original paintings on display, the gallery also stocks prints, limited editions, bronzes, Kazuri jewellery, pottery by John Egerton and others, and a selection of quality gifts and cards. Gift tokens are also available.
